Hungry For More
Would you volunteer yourself to risk your life for a family member? Would you do it knowing that you might have to kill someone? Katniss Everdeen a brave, mature, and loyal teen knows it is what she has to do to keep her family alive. After having her sister Prim chosen out of the lottery to be the District 12 tribute, she volunteers herself to take her place. From then on it is a big and arduous adventure for Katniss. She has to leave her family, who she provides for after having her father die in a mining incident. She has to fight against someone who loves her, and she has to keep the audience’s attention with brave acts throughout the games. The Hunger Games plot builds suspense throughout the whole book because it uses flashbacks, it is unique and the cause and effect chain could go on forever.
Flashbacks could put a halt to the flow of the story, but in this case it works out to work into the present. With Katniss having to leave District 12, she starts thinking about her family an awful lot. She thought about them so much that when she talked to anyone, District 12 along with her family and friends became the discussion topic. One example of flashback in the book is when Katniss reflects back on home, which makes her think of Gale and then go to how they met and hunted together. To pull out of that flashback, she started talking into more general terms of their relationship until it becomes part of the present. Another flashback that Katniss had was right in the beginning of the book when Peeta was chosen to be the other tribute from district 12. She thought about the time he burnt loaves of bread on purpose for her, just so she could have them. While doing so, he also risked his own safety for fear that his licentious mom would beat him. Before Katniss could thank the boy, she started hoofing away fast. These flashbacks help build suspense and knowledge about what is to come in the story. They help by giving you some more history about character relationships. In the book, Katniss is a great hunter with a bow and arrow because she always hunted with Gale, which she explained in her flashback. People want to know why Katniss is hesitant to kill Peeta. It is because he helped her out by giving her food to feed her family. It also adds on to how he is in love with her and she ends up helping him survive throughout the end of the games. Flashbacks are a great way to let the reader know more about the present and build suspense by knowing history that you did not know.
The plot along with flashbacks is very unique in its own ways. Being unique means that it could change or turn at anytime without anyone knowing what is next. Since the book is fiction, the author can make whatever they want to happen, happen. One example of this is the deadly tracker jackers used to try and kill the Careers. The audience never saw that coming because tracker jackers are not a real thing, but they are based around something real. They are like bees; however, they are bigger and when stung by them, you swell up with huge bumps and eventually die. The thought of tracker jackers being used to help kill other tributes was a surprise. Another example of how the plot was unique is the killing of other humans, which is something frowned upon in today’s society. The Capitol forces twenty four tributes from each of their districts to fight each other to their death in a big arena and leave only the best tribute standing. Adding to that is that it is widely televised, and the parents have to watch their children kill or get killed. Now when you read the title Hunger Games the first thing that comes to mind is not kids killing kids. You would think of food, or something along those lines. Since killing other humans is not something we can do for enjoyment, no one expected it. Although it makes the plot that much more complicated and it leaves you in suspense for, who will be the toughest tribute?
Lastly, the plot is made by cause and effect. Without cause and effect you would have yourself a very boring story. Many things happened throughout the games to make the plot bigger and leaving you thinking what is going to happen next. One example of cause and effect is when the games announced that two tributes could survive from the same district. This caused Katniss and Peeta to be able to join together and help each other win for their district. However, when Peeta gets stabbed by Cato and stung by tracker jackers it leaves Katniss taking care of Peeta and fighting by herself. In the end that cause worked out because if they did not allow the tributes to come together Peeta would have died. Another cause and effect that helps the plot add suspense is when Katniss volunteered to be the District 12 tribute over Prim. If Prim were to be in the Hunger Games, she would have not done well. By Katniss stepping in, she is bound and determined to win for her family’s sake. Without Katniss stepping in, there would not be all the effects she had on the game. For example, the games would not have the “love story” she and Peeta put on. Prim would not have all the hunting experience and knowledge Katniss did to make it this far. Cause and effect is one of the most important components in making a plot; little things that add together to make it more interesting and keep you on the edge of your seat. The Hunger Games plot did a great job of that.
Overall, the Hunger Games is a very unique story. The plot takes many twists and turns leaving wondering what is going to happen. It has little events that lead in too much bigger ones that could have effect on the whole story. It uses great examples of flashbacks to tell you more on why and how a character is going to do or did something. The nefarious acts of the characters keep your attention and make the plot even more suspenseful because you do not know what they are daring to do next. Without flashbacks, the uniqueness, and cause and effect the plot would have not been thrilling at all.
