Reflection
Thinking back upon this past year, a theme that keeps coming to my mind is don’t let one mistake define who you are. Three essays for Comp 1 related to this theme, as well as some of the experiences in my life.
First, I wrote my Argument Essay #2 about Lance Armstrong doping. Everyone knows Lance Armstrong as a great athlete. People who look up to Lance, specifically bikers, look at him for all his accomplishments. When he was accused of doping, it took a toll on him; however, the true fans stuck with him through his tough times. The whole situation of him doping is unclear because of his battle with cancer, but they still took everything he has ever earned away from him. All of his Tour de France titles, everything. That made Lance give up the fight because it was stressing him out, but he still does what he loves without competing. He did not let one mistake take away what he loves.
The theme don’t let one mistake define who you are also runs through my Argument Essay #1 Essay “Taking a Year Off of College”. Plans after high school are big decisions in your life. You have to decide what career you want to pursue, where you want to live, etc. College is the big question after high school; to go or not to go? Well that is up to you and your parents. After you graduate, most of you are eighteen and have the right to make your own decisions. Some people might not agree with your decision, especially your parents if you choose not to go. Although going is the ideal thing to do now days, some people still choose not to go. Don’t let anyone tell that you made a mistake by not going, it’s your choice and there are some career paths you could take. Not everyone who has it made went to college.
My last essay was my Novel Essay on the book “The Hunger Games.” It is all about tributes who go and fight for their districts. Katniss, the main character of the book makes the decisions to be her district’s tribute. When her sister is picked, she volunteers so her sister does not have to. Older and wiser Katniss knows that she has made a mistake volunteering herself and risking her life; however, she is saving her younger sister. In this case, her mistake was a wise one and defined her as the better and bigger person. Her brave acts made the story interesting.
All in all, this year has had its up and downs. I personally have made mistakes in school and outside of school. Some were big, some were small; but, I didn’t let them change me. If anything, I learned from them and they taught me lessons. Therefore I won’t make the same mistakes again in the future. Someone who doesn’t make mistakes hasn’t ever tried anything new.
