Is It A Want Or a Need?
There are many different people in this world and they have needs and wants. Sometimes, people get their needs and wants confused. They take the wants (luxuries) more serious than their needs (necessities). The Lorax is a perfect example of people taking their wants and needs for granted. The world of the Lorax is very similar to the real world. Like our world, people in the Lorax were needy, selfish, and expectant of others.
Do you enjoy your things? Do you always want more? You do not have to deny it, most people will take new things when they can get them. In fact, some people think they need new things. People do not take the time to appreciate the things they have anymore. That sounds familiar to the Lorax’s world. He made a couple thneeds and no one wanted them. One person came across the thneed and then everyone had to have it. Once everyone saw all the uses of the thneed it became popular, which made people want it more. The only problem was that they did not need them. That is where people are needy in the Lorax world, just like here in everyday life.
Another way their world compared to the real one is that some people were selfish. Not everyone, but some people in the world are very selfish. All they think about is how to benefit themselves and doing so they do not realize that they could be making others suffer. The movie portrays this when they are over producing the thneeds and clear cutting all the truffula trees. The Once-ler did not think about all the homes he was taking away from the animals. He also did not think about how he was diminishing nature’s beauty. That is a big problem in today’s world. Environmental harm is growing because of human wants and they are not thinking about the needs of others. In the end it came back to hurt him, just like it will if people keep being selfish in today’s world.
Lastly in both worlds, people are expectant or very expecting of others. They expect people to help them or hand them success. It is becoming a growing problem in today’s economy. For example, the number of people on welfare is growing. They expect the government to help them out, when some of them are perfectly capable of having one or more jobs. Why do that when they can sit home and get spoon fed instead? This compares to the Lorax when he goes bankrupt after running out of truffula trees. He expected everyone to be his friend after he betrayed them all to become a millionaire. He expected the animals to come back and forgive him after taking their homes away. He did not understand that making himself happy hurt many others and now he has no one to go to.
In conclusion, the world of the Lorax portrayed many characteristics of the real world. Even though the real world does not always breakout in song and dance, it teaches some of the same important lessons; lessons that are going to matter in the future. If everyone learned their lesson the world would be a better place; however, we are all human and tend to make the same mistakes. The important thing is to take the three points of concern or lessons and try to make them better. Then the Lorax’s world and the real world would be better places all together.
